Have you heard of the Ahr Valley Wine Region? Until my visit of last week, I had not. Marietta Marquet and Gert Wolter invited me to their home in Dernau on the Ahr River to experience this little known wine region situated just south of Bonn. Arriving by auto, I was astonished by the steepness of the hillside slopes, making the vineyard plantings akin to the rice pads of Bali. It was apparent that maintaining the terrain and harvesting the grapes must be accomplished by hand – a costly mission.
